S.4394 National Science Foundation Artificial Intelligence Education Act of 2024

Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) introduced and sponsored the National Science Foundation Artificial Intelligence Education Act of 2024 (S.4394) with 1 cosponsor on May 22nd, 2024. The bill is intended to support the growth of the US workforce in artificial intelligence through educational initiatives.

Notably, the act grants the National Science Foundation the ability to provide undergraduate and graduate scholarships focused on AI and quantum computing. These programs would be funded with the goal of increasing government expertise in sectors like agriculture, education, and manufacturing. Additionally, the legislation also supports fellowships for professional development, helping those in the STEM and education workforce to gain additional skills related to AI technologies.

Proponents claim that by enhancing AI education, the US will maintain their competitive edge in AI innovation and have a workforce that can meet the demands of the ever-growing AI and quantum computing fields.

As of August 1st, 2024, the bill has been placed on the Senate Legislative Calendar and is likely to be voted on (eventually). Due to our countries pressing need for AI education, this bill has wide bipartisan support and is expected to become a law.
