S.4178 The Future of Artificial Intelligence Innovation Act of 2024
Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) introduced and sponsored The Future of Artificial Intelligence Innovation Act of 2024 (S.4178) with 6 cosponsors on April 18th, 2024. The bill is intended to enhance US leadership in artificial intelligence and ensure safety in future innovation.
The Future of Artificial Intelligence Innovation Act of 2024 would establish the US AI Safety Institute under the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The organization would be tasked with promoting voluntary AI standards and accelerating innovation. It would try to ensure that future AI technologies are developed with a focus on reliability and transparency.
Further, this legislation would direct the National Institute of Standards and Technology to collaborate and communicate with federal agencies, industry, and academia to develop AI standards that align with the United State's best interests.
Finally, the act would support public and private sector collaboration by providing means for the involvement of both sectors in advancing AI technology and making systems that meet the needs and match the complexities of the US economy and national security.
In a time of rapid technological innovation, this bill would try to address the ethical and regulatory challenges posed by AI.
This legislation has wide bipartisan support and is expected (in some form) to eventually become a law. Just recently, this bill was referred to the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation and was ordered to be reported favorably—a good indication.
