OPINION: Review of Trump Madison Square Garden Event
Donald Trump is a man of many talents. Unfortunately, only one of them was on display last night at Madison Square Garden: his unparalleled ability for hate.
In the closing event of his campaign, divisive rhetoric and inflammatory remarks took center stage. It was truly a rally of his greatest hits, coming from his tired playbook of hate. Trump spent his time labeling those who oppose him as “the enemy from within" and suggesting that “mentally deranged” people should be removed from the country. Arguably worse, controversial remarks from supporters prior to him speaking featured crude comments about Vice President Kamala Harris, fueling an atmosphere of hostility rather than unity—just what our country needs. Consequently, the remarks overshadowed any policy message Trump may have intended to convey during his final campaign push.
Trump supporters have tried to frame this vulgar display as “comedy.” But where comedy usually brings people together, Trump’s words were sharp and divisive, aimed at rallying anger and creating a framework to deny the upcoming election. His humor, if you could call it that, didn't seek to bridge gaps but to further polarize an already fragmented nation.
In a rally that was anything but presidential, he ignored a crucial opportunity to lead and stuck to the playbook of fear and prejudice. A closing rally, especially on a national stage like Madison Square Garden, could have been his chance to unite, to share a vision, and to focus on the positive. Instead, it was just one more act in his lifelong show of resentment and division.
Trump's brand of rhetoric on display last night represents a setback, a step away from crucial progress and understanding. We need leaders who genuinely work to inspire hope and promote progress, not laugh at others’ expense and hate.
