H.R.9829 Students Working for Communities Act
Representative Jahana Hayes (D-CT-5) sponsored and introduced the Students Working for Communities Act (H.R.9829) on September 25, 2024. This legislation is dedicated to expanding community service opportunities within the Federal Work-Study program.
The bill would increase the percentage of Federal Work-Study funding allocated for students working in community service roles. As of now, 7% of FWS funding is directed toward nonprofit positions, a number that has remained unchanged since 1998.
The act proposes to gradually raise the community service funding as overall Federal Work-Study appropriations increase. If FWS appropriations were to reach $1.3 billion, 9% of the funds would go to community service roles. The percentage would continue to rise as appropriations rise, reaching up to 24% if appropriations exceed $2.55 billion.
Proponents of this legislation address the need to expose more students to careers in public service while also helping community-based organizations manage local challenges as a major reason for supporting the bill.
On September 25th, the Students Working for Communities Act was referred to the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.
