H.R.722 To implement equal protection under the 14th article of amendment to the Constitution for the right to life of each born and preborn human person.

Representative Eric Burlison (R-MO-7) introduced and sponsored H.R.722 on February 1, 2025, titled “To implement equal protection under the 14th article of amendment to the Constitution for the right to life of each born and preborn human person,” with 70 cosponsors. This legislation aims to extend constitutional protections to all humans from the moment of conception by asserting that the 14th Amendment’s guarantee of equal protection applies to the unborn.

If passed, the bill would direct federal agencies to recognize the right to life of every unborn child at all stages of development. Proponents contend that this measure is necessary to safeguard the rights of the most vulnerable, arguing that the Constitution’s promise of equal protection must include preborn life. Critics, however, argue that such a federal mandate could infringe on personal autonomy and reproductive rights, and they raise concerns about how it might affect access to medical services, including fertility treatments and procedures for ectopic pregnancies.

Shortly after being introduced, H.R.722 was referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary for further deliberation. While it has drawn strong support from anti-abortion advocates, its ultimate fate remains uncertain as legislators continue to debate the appropriate balance between federal authority and individual liberties.
